Spring 2021, Adobe InDesign

The Brief:

The idea for this project was to write a short essay about a graphic designer that inspired us, and then to present the essay in a way where I could make multiple designs that emulate that designer’s style, and then present the essay throughout, in a way that meshed well with the designs.

Conceptualization:

I chose the designer Art Chantry, and I used his method of using vintage photos that were out of copyright for the theme of my designs: I wanted to make a book full of advertisements for defunct businesses.

Execution:

For the photos, I chose them in the same method that Chantry chooses them, which is that I used vintage photos in order to avoid copyright. In order to create the same screen printed effect that is present in Chantry’s works, I had to run the photos through both Photoshop and Illustrator multiple times, and some photos I even printed out and threw them in the scanner multiple times to make them more washed out. For some of them, I also used hand lettering to emulate Chantry’s style, and I also used the same, psychedelic colors that would appear in his works as well.
